This piece combines five layers of design to create an abstract representation of what “home” means to me. The overlapping paper sheets display viewpoints of my childhood home, the current apartment building, topographic elevation lines of my hometown, map lines from the town in Colombia, where my family is from, and a one-point perspective of the streets of New York City. As a major in visual arts and urban studies, I aim to explore how these two disciplines can interact in ways that are unique and personal to me.

By varying the shades of paper pasted onto the wooden block, the shading of the geometric forms also varies in response. By utilizing all the basic inking techniques in specific portions of the composition, the ink allows me to create an architecturally inspired and more complex visual language. While at first glance it may appear confusing and incoherent, upon closer examination, it becomes a readable network of place and space.
