WATCHES AND WARNINGS is a collage installation which explores an interstice between New York City’s distant and recent past in order to imagine our impending urban future. Large collages bring together 20th century photographs of the snow-covered city with public advisories gathered from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hurricane Sandy archives, while smaller pieces use glossy magazine imagery to interrogate our urban and ecological desires.
As snow falls less and less, and as 1000-year storms become 100-year storms, as streets are inundated by seawater instead of snowdrifts, the piece prompts us to consider how we will respond to the unprecedented, the unpredictable, and the nearly-unimaginable.
