Artist Statement
Interior spaces straddle the line between curated and haphazard living. There is intention in interior spaces, but they do not exist in a vacuum. The objects in these rooms are purposefully chosen, whether it be for functional, aesthetic, or sentimental reasons. However, their arrangement and appearance are then impacted by outside forces such as human presence, light, and time of day.
These paintings highlight this relationship, showing spaces that are lived in, where objects are affected by daily life. Objects rest with the anticipation that they will be used once again tomorrow;
pages turn, a pillow is fluffed, the candle snuffed out. Light and shadow move throughout a space, a light bounces back, a window, a mirror. It’s distorted and familiar. An image catches my eye.
Through moments of dramatic lighting, detailed brushwork, and shifts in color, I create a sense of tangibility and immersion in the paintings. I want the paintings to strike a variety of different emotional chords in an attempt to capture the distinct, fleeting, moments of life lived in spaces.
