My new series of acrylic and mixed media paintings consists of three depictions of Russian apartment buildings. Using a combination of modernism and realism, these pieces show the breathing, living environment of my homeland. They are both nostalgic and, for me, new. As the sun sets, some apartments have already begun to turn on their lights, which glow like a warm, comfortable fire. My aim is for a viewer to find themselves engaged and possibly homesick, or they can create their own narrative within the paintings.
When I start a painting, I draw inspiration from mundane aspects that we perceive in life, such as apartment buildings or doorways, and infuse the mundane with a sense of mystery and the uncanny. I paint these buildings with fine detail and attention to the imperfections, as to not give an unrealistic or glossed over image of what Russia truly is.
