Trail of Tears
Part of a network of land and water routes marking the passage west of more than 16,000 Cherokee forced from their ancestral lands in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia by the United States Government in 1838. The relocation of Native Americans to locations west of the Mississippi River, in what is now Oklahoma, was mandated by the Indian Removal Act signed into law by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830.
